gastric bypass FloridaGasrric Bypass is a type of weight loss surgery that involves a significant alteration in then anatomy of the patient. In the past, a significant number of patients in Melbourne Florida underwent gastric bypass. The reason for this is that prior to the establishment of LifeShape and the introduction of the Lap-Band in Melbourne, this was the only option available. In the last five years however Lap-Band is by far the most common weight loss surgery in Melbourne. The gastric bypass procedure involves cutting the stomach and intestines in several locations. When the stomach and intestines are reconnected they join in such a way that the food the patient ingests bypasses the stomach. (gastric means stomach) Because of this diversion of the food stream, some patients envision that the way the surgery works is that the calories in the food are not absorbed. Since most of what is bypassed is the stomach, and there is little calorie absorption that occurs in the stomach, this is not the mechanism at play. Instead gastric bypass patients lose weight because the surgery helps them decrease their hunger.
The term “gastric bypass” is often used to refer specifically to the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure. In addition to the Roux-en-Y, there is a procedure called “Mini Gastric Bypass”. The Mini Gastric Bypass is a more technically simple procedure, but there is no data on its long-term success or safety, so most bariatric surgeons do not perform it, and most insurance companies will not cover it. The information below is specific to the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery.
Gastric bypass surgery can be performed either through the traditional “open” method – which involves making a large incision in the abdomen – or it can be performed laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery is also known as Minimally Invasive Surgery. Small incisions are made in the belly, through which a video camera and other specialized surgical tools can be placed. Laparoscopic surgery usually results in shortened recovery time, fewer complications, and less postoperative scarring. Most bariatric surgeons are now performing the Roux-en-Y bypass laparoscopically. The procedure is also sometimes done using the DaVinci robotic system. There is presently no data that shows any improvement of outcome to the patient of robotic surgery versus the laparoscopic technique.
After undergoing this procedure, patients usually stay in the hospital for 2-3 days. The need for a short stay in the hospital in most cases makes the cost of gastric bypass higher than other weight loss surgery options. For patients with insurance coverage most of this increased cost is bourne by the patients insurance company. However for most modern plans that involve copays and cost shares and high maximal yearly spending limits, this can be a significant amount of money. For example a patient with a 20% cost share in many cases can expect to pay in excess of $6000 as their share of the hospital bill alone. The recovery period for the bypass is longer than with the adjustable gastric banding procedure because it is more invasive. Many patients who have sedentary jobs often return to work within 2-4 weeks, while patients with more physically demanding jobs may be out of work for 4-6 weeks. All surgeries have risks of complications. Potential complications of a gastric bypass include nausea and vomiting, vitamin and mineral deficiency, intolerance to certain foods, gallstones, hernias at incision sites, ulcers and bowel obstructions, as well as rare, but more serious risks, including blood clots, leaking at one of the staple lines in the stomach.
