The internet has been abuzz with a new image, which claims to show exactly what goes into a jar of Nutella. Brace yourself because what you may learn now will shock you. Hence, instead of the usual chocolate-hazelnut spread, the image indicates that popular product is in fact filled with something else. According to the picture, the Nutella jar is filled with layers of the brand’s five main ingredients in their raw form:
- palm oil;
- skimmed milk powder;
What Does This Mean?
What extremely shocking is that half the jar is filled with white sugar. Hence, the image does not only reveal what’s in the jar but also exactly how much of the ingredients. What’s more, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) declared palm oil to be more carcinogenic than any other oil.
On the other hand, Nutella denies the claims and asserts that the palm oil it uses is of high quality and is safe to eat. However, it hasn’t declared yet on the image sweeping the web. It is known that its recipe is a closely-guarded secret.
On the nutritional information on its jars and on its website, it is stated that each 15g tablespoon of the spread contains 8.5g of sugar. This means that each 400g jar of Nutella contains a 227.2g of sugar.
Then again, there is the controversial palm oil. The palm oil provides the smooth texture of Nutella and promotes the shelf life. Even, Nutella insists the spread would not be the same without the oil. This oil is the cheapest oil on the market. According to the European Food Safety Authority, palm oil generated more of a potentially carcinogenic contaminant than other vegetable oils when refined at temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius. Hence, people should avoid eating it.
It isn’t strange that Nutella tastes so good given the fact the ingredients and the sugar it contains.
