Turmeric Fights Inflammation and Cancer: Here Is How Much You Should Take and How Often

Turmeric is one of the most beneficial and powerful spices in the world. It is well known due to its healing properties. This spice is used for the treatment of various diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, psoriasis, and Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. Turmeric has been used interchangeably with curcumin. However, there is a huge difference between them and you should know it.

Turmeric vs Curcumin

Turmeric is packed with different compounds and of all these compounds, curcumin is considered to be the most beneficial. However, curcumin can be also found in ginger. Most of the research done are made on curcumin and not on turmeric.

Health Benefits of Turmeric

This powerful spice is a flowering tropical plant native to India. It contains at least 20 compounds that are antibiotic, 14 known cancer preventatives, 12 that are anti-tumor, 12 anti-inflammatory, and at least 10 antioxidants. Moreover, it contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and anticancer properties. These are some of its benefits:

  • prevents and fights cancer;
  • treats and prevents Alzheimer’s;
  • soothes arthritis pain;
  • treats depression;

Turmeric and Cancer

Turmeric contains anti-cancer properties. It enhances the effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and it effectively destroys only tumor cells, while keeping the healthy ones intact. Moreover, it prevents cancer development. The active ingredient of turmeric-curcumin, blocks an enzyme called Lipoxygenase and stops the division of cancer cells. Turmeric hinders the formation of new blood vessels and inhibits the growth of cancer cells. You should note that you should consume turmeric prepared in food because it provides more benefits than taking either curcumin or turmeric supplements.

The body doesn’t absorb curcumin well and thus, you should combine it with black pepper to stimulate its absorption. Optionally, cook turmeric in oil because curcumin is fat soluble and its bioavailability is enhanced when cooked in oil. You should use peanut, sesame and coconut oil, and butter-derived ghee.

Turmeric Tea Recipe

This is another great way to consume turmeric. You should incorporate this amazing tea into your regular diet.


  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • ½ cup coconut milk (you can replace almond milk or regular milk for coconut milk, as long as it includes some fat)
  • ½ cup water
  • Honey or stevia (to taste)


Bring the water to boil, add turmeric powder and simmer for 10 minutes. Then, add the coconut milk and oil, and heat the tea until warmed. Finally, add stevia or honey.

Turmeric Dosage

This is the recommended turmeric dosages for adults:

  • Cut root: 1.5 to 3 grams per day
  • Dried, powdered root: 1 to 3 grams per day
  • Fluid extract (1:1): 30-90 drops per day
  • Tincture (1:2): 15-30 drops, 4 times per day
  • The recommended curcumin dosage for a standardized powder supplement is 400 to 600 mg, 3 times per day.
